I have scanned and calibrated the Veronica Roodt Map of Botswana and I would not like to spend more money on software. It looks great. I would buy it 4 months ago if I knew it. Maybe next year if I visit Zambia.

Is there any other map for Caprivi as the Veronica Roodt for Botswana?

Do you know if there is very thick sand very difficult to negociate with limited experience on this kind of tracks? I am a bit worried about that. We will go 3 people alone in a Toyota Hylux.

Do you recommend me avoid Mamili and stay just in Mudumu and Susuwe triangle?

Thanks again

What I would do is make an overlay in GE of the Veronica Roodt map. You can adjust the transparency to accomodate your needs and then print out with the tracks4africa roads and tracks visible through the transparency. This should be more then adequate for your needs. But if you feel you need more, there is the Map Studio maps that are ok. I did the whole of East and Southern African once with their map book. Buy that in Africa after you arrive. From what you have said, you are not really doing anything unusual and should be in the maps.

Don't worry about Mamili when driving there. And I wouldn't recommend you bypass it. There are a couple excellent campsites, Lyadura 1 has good memories. There is even a campsite about 500 metres from the famous Kings Pool Camp in Botswana. And you could camp there for less then what the upmarket is tipping over yonder. You just need to resolve the reservation situation. Think- few people in the park and that should be enough of a draw.

Great information. I bought online several Veronica Roodts maps including the Okavango Map to scan it, but it does not have information of the roads and tracks on the namibian side, so I do not have tracks to overlay on GE. It is a pity. I guess you have a layer of T4A because you paid for that and instaled it with the T4A pack.

I have whatched on GE that there is a main track around the botswana border and several tracks go to the river area. Do you usually take these tracks to visit the park and are easy to follow? I am thinking to save the image files on my PC with the calibration grid to calibrate and download on my PDA.

I finally will go from Kasane to Katima to pick up the permits so I guess the best way to do it will be from Katima Mulilo to Mamili, Mudumu, Kongola, Nambwa and back to Kongola.

Thank you very much for your experience and help.

There aren't many roads and tracks in GE that part of Namibia as you are looking at a small areathat is mostly game reserve or National Park. You need a little patience with the roads to show up. Maybe slowly zoom in and out till you can see them all. Once you have done that, I would put in some placemarkers and record the waypoints for later use when navigating with a gps. Maybe do some screen saves and print.

Your route plan is good. I don't anticipate that you should have any road conditions besides needing chassis clearance, that a 4x4 should have, to get where you are going. Be aware that ellies may pass through your camp. Don't start the vehicle or do anything rash and they will leave you alone. The herds I've seen frequently have babies in tow. They will know you are there, and will leave you quietly as they arrived.

I was in my rooftop tent and watched for over 45 minutes the ellies playing in the river just metres from me. I had a jolt when I realized that a big ellie was next to me, just on the other side of the canvas, when I saw her trunk flick near the corner of the screen of the tent and grab the branch adjacent to it.

I hope that I will see the ellies inside the car instead of the canvas. It sounds great.

I will try to do my homework with GE this weekend.

Thanks again for all your help and patience.

Hi Luangwablondes and people interested on maps for Africa. Luangwablondes was right, GE has a layer with T4A tracks in an updated version that I did not have. You can use T4A layer and you will find most of the tracks in the african parks. You can charge the calibration grid also in the same image. After zooming in the areas as much as you need to download in your GPS you can save in *.JPG file format and all GPS software will be able to deal with this kind of files to be calibrated.

Thanks a lot,

Tomas
